Understanding the Short and Long-Term Consequences of Drunk Driving
Many people get behind the wheel after they have been drinking. Some people stop themselves after having a drink at happy hour. Other people get buzzed or drunk without realizing it and get behind the wheel to leave. While some people make it home without incident, others are arrested for drinking and driving.

Consequences of DUI Charges
If you are charged with a DUI or DWI, it is important to understand the penalties you may be facing. Many people think the consequences for drunk driving stop at a fine. The truth is there is much more at stake:
- Increased insurance rates: If you are arrested for driving under the influence, your insurance rates will go up. Some insurance companies will drop people who are arrested for drunk driving. However, in Alabama, it is illegal to drive without insurance, and many insurance companies have higher rates for DUI holders.
- License suspension: If you are arrested for drunk driving, you can lose your license for 90 days. In the rural parts of Alabama, public transportation is limited if it is accessible at all. When I work with clients, I represent them in the administrative process, fighting to reduce their charges and minimize the impact on their license.
- Job loss: If driving is a primary part of your job, you could be finding yourself without work. People with a commercial driver’s license (CDL), taxi or bus drivers, and delivery people all risk their livelihood if they are arrested for drunk driving.
